Gaston Tropical Storm Again!
Sorry to areas of lower southern Maryland and SE VA as
this storm went further south and east than I thought.
Spoke with my folks in Richmond who received around 8
inches of rain. They said this was devastating. Of
note, Gaston never really lost its tropical look or
feel. Strong circulation has even given it a Tropical
Storm ranking again and that was almost before it hit
the coast! (Hurricane Danny did the same thing in
1997)
After this leaves, we will have a nice week.
OK one more note on Frances. Looking like Florida will
be the target. Sorry for my flip flopping, but I am
almost certain Florida will be its landfall state. It
will then ride up towards us so we will possibly see
indirect effects of it around Labor Day.

Gaston Rains & isolated Severe! Frances Thoughts shift North!
First of all we still have the remnants of Gaston
Today which will traverse the state causing a path of
very heavy rains. It appears that Gaston will take the
heavy rain swath east of a line from Danville to to
Washington DC to Wilmington Delaware. Ironically, the
heavier rains look to go west of a line from Norfolk
to Salisbury.. BUT.. Tropical systems can easily make
a small shower a very heavy rainstorm, so anywhere
east of the Mountains may see heavy rain storms this
afternoon. There is the risk for brief tornadoes,
especially east of the track.
Now Frances! I am more concerned that the Southeastern
US may be struck after all. Latest models have turned
the storm to NC/SC/GA threat! IF SC/NC get hit again
this would be the 5th tropical system to hit there
this year! So my Florida thoughts are changing! It is
important because its remnants would threaten here if
the northerly tack verifies! This will be the last I
discuss it until (and if) it poses a threat to our
weather.
So today, heavy rain across the piedmont and coastal
areas with hit or miss heavier rainstorms elsewhere.
As I also said, brief tornadoes will also be possible
east of the actual track of Gaston.
All for now!

Topical Storm Gaston to cause Rains
Right now, Gaston is in the eastern part of SC and
barely moving, but a front to the west should provide
a kicker to move the storm north and east. One unique
thing I am noticing that the rain is actually west of
the storm. I expect this to change, but, if not, we
are in for a rainy Monday Night/Tuesday for all the
region and not just the Southeastern and eastern parts
of the area. Right now, SE Virginia should prepare for
heavy, flooding rains Monday into Monday night. Severe
storms will likely accompany the system east of the
storm track.
Every time I hear Gaston, I think of Beauty and the
Beast and the Macho Gaston who tries to kill the
Beast!! And the Beast, is Frances!
As far as hurricane Frances goes, I am thinking we may
have a Category 5 storm on our hands at some point.
Frances is in the very same region of the tropics that
Isabel was last year, BUT, The ridge to the north of
Frances will keep the storm on a far south track. I am
betting Florida, and maybe southern Florida. Frances
is definitely in a similar location as Andrew as well.
This is my concern. Florida is going to get hit by
another Major to severe Hurricane. I am then concerned
that another part of the gulf could be hit again. IF
SO, this could very well be the costliest hurricane
ever!
Before you relax for our region, it is very possible
another tropical system is forming SW of Bermuda. I
think this one may be pulled NE by the troughiness in
the Northeast, but it could miss, and slowly move
westward towards the east coast!
It is a busy tropical season. With Frances becoming
the third Major Hurricane for the Atlantic which is
the earliest this has ever happened! (at least that
there are records for!)
All for now!

8/27 Tropical Systems to watch
Concern is growing that a slow moving tropical system
will come through the region starting early next week.
A new tropical depression has formed off the
Southeastern US and will possibly strengthen to a
tropical storm. It is nearly stationary, but the
interaction of Frances (a very healthy looking
hurricane east of the Lesser Antilles) may actually
push it Northwestward over the next several days. This
is just a heads up that we may see tropical rains, and
a lot of it, Monday to Wednesday time frame next week.
The next concern is the eventual track of Frances.
Frances will likely hit the US east coast later next
week. The best bet (and boy is this a far off
forecast) is that she will come ashore anywhere from
Florida to the NC/SC border. My gut is FL/GA border at
this time, but it is a far ways off. The threat will
be that a Major (Category 3 or higher storm) or even
possible Severe (Winds above 155mph) hurricane will be
devastate communities that are hit. Its longer term
projection could bring its remnants up in our region,
and this far out, everyone is urged to stay alert!

8/20 - 8/21 Severe Weather Possible
Heavy thunderstorms are crossing into Maryland from
Maryland and West Virginia at the present time.
Isolated severe weather will be possible this evening
in northern areas but the threat should be less during
the overnight.
Saturday should be quite stormy, and even downright
rainy in the southeastern part of the area. Severe
storms are possible during these storms.
This will make a great transition into a very pleasant
Sunday!

8/19 Severe Threat this afternoon
Hot and humid conditions will play a role in possible
isolated severe thunderstorms this afternoon and
evening. Northern areas have a bit better of a shot of
severe as there is a front that will be traversing the
area with some dynamics available for winds, hail, and
even isolated tornadoes due to some shear that is
available.
Please stay tuned to media and weather outlets for
Watches and/or warnings.
All for now!

8/17 Weather Outlook
Working to get back to issuing these daily as the new
blogging interface allows an email to update my site.
I hope these outlooks will become a more regular
occurrence!
The weather starts off great today. Temps will be in
the mid 80s with some humidity beginning to be felt as
winds will begin their shift to the south. Can't rule
out isolated, bay/ocean induced convection or even
highland induced convection, but isolated will be the
case!
Tomorrow there is a chance that parts of the region
will see severe weather (
http://www.midatlanticweather.com/severe )so please
take note of this and an alert may be issued
concerning this. Highs will be in the mid to upper
80's and the humidity will be back!
Thursday and Friday will be similar to tomorrow, with
afternoon and evening thunderstorms possible.
The weekend could be really stormy as we have three
factors to deal with.
1. A strong front from Canada which on the other side
is extremely, and unseasonably cool (There could be
frost in parts of the Northeastern US this weekend!)
2. That front will stall in our region (actually there
are 2 fronts. One to the north holding up the really
chilly air, and the secondary which will get stuck on
us)
3. The remnants of Earl which may have a chance to get
entrained into the stalled front.
Much uncertainty remains as to how much precip we get
this weekend, but the factors above will need to be
monitored as severe weather and flooding rains may
need to be forecasted.
All for now!

Charley and the old front
Severe weather already firing the Southeastern part of
the area! The old stalled front is providing a focus
for overrunning rain which has already been heavy and
severe tonight! Please stay alert.
Tomorrow, the official track still takes the storm
close to us. Winds will be on the increase, tidal
flooding, and heavy rains!
At 11:00 pm Charley was packing winds of 85mph and
about to go into the Atlantic. It will strengthen and
is forecasted to come onshore again near the NC/SC
border. I am not sure of this and feel it may be
further east.. but models diverge on this. Despite
this, with the fronts involvement it looks like heavy
rains and some severe weather will still be likely
tomorrow!
All for now!
Please note! I am possibly on the road tomorrow and
may not be able to update again! Please stay tuned to
news and weather outlets for updates!
