9/27 DC/MD/VA Weather Outlook

Still really dry. Last evening's rain did not do anything to our drought. Another chance of rain showers Early Thursday and then a cold shot before a warm up! Tropics grow quiet, but for how long?

Summary: dry conditions continue. I have updated the drought page a bit: http://www.midatlanticweather.com/drought . Another chance of rain possibly early Thursday and then a really cool day Friday. This will be brief but temps in the 30’s for the mountains and 40’s west of the I-95 corridor is significant. Do not get used to it as we climb in temps and have 90 degrees within range next week for many areas. Concern for the drought continuing.

Tropics: Finally a bit calmer. I only say a bit as the Caribbean has a disturbance that poses some threat of strengthening.

9/22 DC/MD/VA Weather Outlook

Still really dry. Slight chance of storms tomorrow, cooler Saturday, then warming back up. Rita is truly Historic! May see first true cold intrusion next week.

Summary: dry conditions continue. This is getting rough as it is the time of year to plant grass! There are hints at the first real cool intrusion of air next week!

Tropics: Rita reached her Historical Status last night as she became the 3^rd strongest Atlantic hurricane on record. She is a massive storm and her track on models has really shifted north this morning. I am concerned that this may be a bit, if not a lot, overdone. The good news is that a storm rarely can stay Category 5 long so HOPEFULLY the system will weaken some before a landfall, but she will still be a Cat 3 or 4 at landfall. There are also signs that she will have some shearing that could weaken her a bit. 9/21 DC/MD/VA Weather Outlook

Dry weather and beautiful days continue, but we are now really in need of rain. Rita hits Category 4 status this morning. May see first true cold intrusion next week.

Summary: Now we are really in need of rain as many areas are 3”+ deficits. 9/7 Dc/MD/VA Weather Outlook

Dry weather and beautiful days continues. Triple Tropical Storms are out in the Atlantic.. Can you tell we are near peak of the season? Concern on Track of Tropical Storm Ophelia and a Gulf Threat.. but still too early to tell. Still see a chance of a return to warm weather next week.

Summary: I consider this the most beautiful time of year! I love fall and the change towards winter and snow is not too far away. We are really dry out there! Tropics: This continues to be the Busiest tropical Storm seasons on record. Ophelia was named last night. The earliest “O” storm to date was September 16^th. Concern is there that Ophelia will go across Florida and then pose a threat to the Gulf states again as at least a minimal hurricane. Still time to watch this one as she will be slow to move for a while. The question I have is will be start borrowing from next year’s storm list? Only 6 more storms to go and, and at this rate, I think we will do it! Historic season indeed!

9/5 DC/MD/VA Weather Outlook

Beautiful weather will be the rule the next 7 days. Unfortunately a turn to warmer air may be on the horizon. Concerns of a FL and then a Gulf Coast threat from what may become Nate.

Summary: I am enjoying going outside and having refreshing air after such a HOT summer. We could use some rains up here. Not seeing that chance this week. Long term it appears likely that the hotter weather will return. Nothing as bad as this summer, but still pretty hot for this time of year

Tropics: Concerns arise as a tropical disturbance is getting its act together east of Florida. This could turn into a depression and then a storm. It is moving very slow and forming slow so we have some time to watch it. I also have concerns over a Caribbean wave that is low enough in latitude to again cause concerns for the gulf. This has been a very rough year!

8/31 DC/MD/VA Weather Outlook

Severe weather is possible today, but not as high of a threat as yesterday. Warm and dry conditions will be the rule for a while after today. A brief cool down and then more summer like weather possible next week.

Summary: First and foremost, Katrina will be the costliest hurricane for the United States ever. The tragedies unfolding in Louisiana and other Gulf Facing states is still just being realized and its true toll will take months to determine. Heartfelt condolences for anyone with family and friends down there. The systems did spawn some severe weather here in Northern Virginia and a tornado was reported in Faquier county which caused damage to homes. The criteria needed to produce more severe weather is very strong in the atmosphere but the trajectory of winds causes downsloping winds off the mountains and subsidence around the Tropical system should limit the overall convection That being said, a single thunderstorm cell would likely become a super cell (rotate) and could drop a tornado. With that RISK I will not drop my severe weather alert, but will emphasize ISOLATED. After the front moves through later today a drier period will ensue and temps will remain in the 80 to even as high as 90 through Saturday. A Brief cool down will follow but I see a chance of pretty warm summer like pattern developing again next week.

Tropics: There are a few systems in the Tropical Atlantic that could become tropical depressions and/or storms in the next day or so, but until next week when the Atlantic will have some changes to its upper level wind flow, the systems should be steered northward. We are 2 weeks from the usual peak of the tropical season for the Atlantic so we will likely have more to come. Unfortunately, this year seems to point to continued threats to the Gulf Coast and Florida with the trajectory of upper level features. We can all hope Katrina is the last of any big storms for this year.

Site News: A lot of new and updated links are now on the web site. I have a lot of new Tropical links to add and I will likely re-organize pages in the next few weeks. Look forward to expanding on the design. Ther could be some slight menu changing, but I find the site effective in communicating what I want so it will be more to make the site cleaner than to have radical changes!

8/30 DC/MD/VA Severe Weather Alert!

Severe Threat today from Katrina Remnants

Though our severe weather today may bring isolated tornadoes which can devastate smaller scale areas, yesterday’s destruction is only beginning to be realized. This storm will go down in the record books and has the potential to top Andrew in her final damage assessments. Prayers and thoughts go out to the families that have lost loved ones and property as well as memories that were washed away or destroyed. I find weather fascinating but I know it can devastate a family and community. Please consider volunteering at local Red Cross or other agencies helping take in donations.

For us, we are under the threat for severe storms today. It is very likely that thunderstorms will bring down some rotation from the upper levels and cause tornadoes. Also, winds aloft are moving very fast and high winds in storms are a good bet. The Storm Prediction Center has wisely put us under a Moderate Risk for Severe weather later today as the remnants of the storm moves to our west. I have been hinting of this for days so hopefully people are aware of the threat. Another threat, with such abundant moisture, will be localized flash flooding. Storms will likely be moving fast enough to prevent a widespread outbreak of flash floods, but tropical systems seem to be able to drop 2 to 3 times the amount of rain in a short period of time than most storms.

8/29 Katrina and Forecast Discussion info

Amazing day in Weather History

First off, devastation has already occurred in New Orleans and Mississippi! Please pray for many who are trapped and have lost homes. We will not know the full detaisl until the storm is over.

Some amazing things I have heard today!

It LOOKS like Downtown New Orleans MAY have missed the worst and will recover
A tanker Broke free in mobile bay and is being pulled by tug boats to prevent catastrophe!
the Weather Channel’s team.. 27 feet above sea level, is fighting for life preservation as the surge was 25 to 30 feet! Read more here http://www.weather.com/blog/weather/?from=wxcenter_news

Currently reporting 125mph winds and moving North.

Where we she go next. North and then northeastward. She is huge and many areas even here will see 3-5 inches of rain in storms, gusty winds and tornadoes. We will really start to feel the affects tomorrow afternoon and overnight into Wednesday!

I will issue an official alert tonight, but we are in alert mode here now and I would just say stay vigilant in watching the track of the system and its track!

Please continue to pray for those in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia on north as death and destruction will be a part of this historic storm!

8/28 Katrina update: Category 5> 160mph winds!

Katrina update and weather update!

It is pretty rare to get a storm to Category 5 status! Katrina has made it and I wonder how strong she gets! As of 8am EDT she is still moving west-northwest. This storm will devastate areas to her east when she makes landfall. She will likely start to to turn to the northwest and eventually north northwest today. There is a chance she may start a bend to the northeast and that will spare New Orleans.

What will she do after this? Despite the models keeping her west of our region I am still concerned we will see affects of her. Now she is as strong as Camille at this time and if she comes in this direction she will likely still be a tropical storm when she traverses the area. Heavy rains and severe weather will be her hallmark once up to this region. Because of her slowness in a turn to the north she will not affect us until Tuesday late or Wednesday.

In the meantime, the front that has stalled to our west (and the helping factor in providing a path for Katrina) will be close enough to provide continued chances of showers and even thunderstorms today through Tuesday.

Highs will remain in the upper 70s and lower 80s and climb to the mid and upper 80s Tuesday.

Please stay tuned to the weather and pray for those in Katrina's path as she will devastate the areas she affects!

I STILL THINK WE WILL SEE AFFECTS OF THIS STORM!

I just want people to watch this system and not get caught up in the models per se (though I myself look at them a lot) until Katrina starts moving north. When she does, expect a potential shift in the track a bit if not quite a bit east of her current forecast. that being said, she has grown in size today and taken on cat 3 status. She can do a lot things now that make here even harder to predict. This could be a Category 5 blow to the gulf coast!

8/26: Alert: Katrina to impact region

Katrina Update:

It appears our region will see the affects of hurricane Katrina Monday into Tuesday. Models have come to somewhat of a consensus of tracking her near or along the Appalachian mountains.

As much as 5-10 inches of rain may affect the region. Severe weather will be likely if the current path verifies!

I will try and do a full assessment this evening. This appears that it will be a catastrophic hurricane for someone on the Gulf Coast.

Conditions have become unstable enough to cause isolated severe storms this afternoon. The best chances will be the southern 2/3rds of the region. The Biggest threat will be high winds and heavy rains.

8/16 DC/MD/VA Weather Outlook

Much needed rain is on the way! Expect showers and isolated thunderstorms today. Rain may be heavy at times in some locations! Nice few days on tap after the rain today in the north, southern areas may still deal with more rain tomorrow. Temps will be somewhat warm again this weekend, but another cool down after that! Canada is starting to cool down and that cooler Polar origin air will pass the border next week!

Summary: Rainy chances today and in the south tomorrow with temps struggling into the low 80s! We need the rain! After the rain chances in the south tomorrow, we will have some warmer weather this weekend and then another chance of cooler weather next week. The signs are starting to appear that fall is on our horizon. Next week a very cool air mass will spill into the Midwest and then the northeast! It is just a matter of time now!

Tropics: Irene is out to sea and the remnants of Tropical Depression 10 show signs of regeneration. He may become Jose in the next few days!

Site News: The website should slowly take on a new organization. I want to make a fresh start on the look and feel and will be doing so in order to gear up for winter. Expect changes to being in the next few weeks as I start working on the design. Also, I hope the email alerts and warnings software will come soon as well as plugins for Earthquakes and UV (though that is not as important now). 8/14 DC/MD/VA Weather Outlook

“Triple H” weather continues for Today and then a BREAK!!! Please stay alert as storms could be severe today and maybe tomorrow. Much cooler Temps come for Tuesday and Wednesday! Temps will climb warmer to hot again by the end of the week!

Summary: Hot! Please stay cool. A front will come through Slowly during the next 36 hours and much cooler temps will visit until Thursday.

Tropics: Irene is on her way out! TD 10 is now already gone! Not seeing much out there right now to get too excited about

8/11 Dc/MD/VA Weather Outlook

Sorry it has been so long! TS Irene likely a threat to our Weather and the Southeast US. Hot conditions with isolated storms possible. Pretty typical Summer weather!

Summary: Sorry again for the long time since I last posted! I have been making some changes to my Web Site and there is always active talk out on the forum which I am excited to say has been updated and I love the new software! Tropical Storm Irene is a serious threat to the Southeast US. I am thinking SC/NC now which is a change from what I had been thinking. I believe she will cause us some weather issues as well next week! Please stay alert to that

7/28 DC/MD/VA Weather Outlook

Yeah.. The break in the heat arrived! Heavy thunderstorms yesterday definitely knocked out power and caused some damage. The front that passed through the area yesterday is hung up in NC and a wave of low pressure will increase rain chances overnight into tomorrow. A risk of a showers on Sunday, but otherwise this is incredible weather! Sorry to all that experienced issues with my site, but I am happy to say it is completely restored and working better than it did! WHY? I switched hosting companies! If looking for a host this deal is incredible, look below for information!

Summary: A powerful Canadian front knocked down the ridiculous heat nationwide and now is hanging around the NC area which could still pose the risk of thunderstorms, especially the southernmost regions near the NC border. There is a chance that a storm or two could be severe down there. A risk of a shower will increase late today and overnight as a wave of low pressure rides along the front. Then a clearer day Saturday North, but south may still be dealing with showers and storms from time to time. Another area wide chance of showers and storms on Sunday. Temps though will be incredibly cooler with highs upper 70s to mid 80s at best! Temps creep to normal levels near Tuesday and make it next Wednesday. An afternoon shower or storm seems possible straight through then.

Tropics: Franklin is hanging on but moving on out to sea. Another disturbance is looking busier out in the Atlantic and is being monitored. Nothing immediate from what I can see beyond Franklin.
